Tevvy Likes Tortillas, Finally

For the past 25 months, I've been leaning on Tevvy to get in on my Mexican food adventures. Progress was slow at first, though The Baby was a tamale trailblazer right from the start.

She and Sean were photographed outside of Felipe's. Tevvy, you've come so far.

Beware The Chicken Roja

After a fantastic night out with visiting burrito expert Jessie and the roomies, we hit Felipe's. That's where the fun ended.

Times past, Felipe's has run out of things like my beloved chicken verde, beans, or burritos altogether. This time was different, worse. Felipe's took the chicken verde off the menu - about a year ago. My heart raced. What was I going to do? The man behind the counter recommended the new dish in town, the chicken roja.

Let's do it.

Some observations. The chicken roja:

  • Is not nearly as good as the chicken verde
  • Is very messy
  • Will stain your shirt
So finishes my excellent night.

Three Amigos At Felipe's

Big Mike and Burrito Chris came for a visit. These college friends witnessed early evidence of my burrito obsession: attempts at cooking. Despite my dismal culinary failure, we have remained friends.

When these two came north for the weekend, we hit Felipe's after a night of casual drinking. How things have changed since college.

Chris agreed to a photograph only if he could dress as Dumb Donald from Fat Albert.

Pretty Girls Make Graves And Tacos

This was forever ago. Cleaning out the photo archive, I came across some pictures from late night Felipe's. A handful of Seano's buddies and I went to see the last Cambridge appearance of Pretty Girls Make Graves earlier that night.

I do not remember if the women that made the tacos were pretty. In fact I think they were men.

Seano likes his tacos with refried beans - what he calls 'Santa Barbara style.' Pictured sipping in the back is Mikey, famous for 'Mikey Monahan style' - which has less to do with eating than drinking.

This show was tough to beat. Topped off with Felipe's, it was definitely one of the best nights of spring.

Felipe's Shuts Door On Boston Tourists

The Boston tourists were my friends Brian and Maria. We went to Felipe's Taqueria after meeting up at a bar. We got there around 2:15 am, and Felipe's was packed as usual.

But there were no more burritos.

I don't mean they ran out (which has happened before), I mean they stopped selling them.

What happened to the petition to stay open till 4:00 am? What happened to closing at 2:30 / 3:00 am? Ugh. We went to IHOP in Brighton. And you know what that means. IHOP gives you pimples.

Felipe's After Bar, No Chicken Verde

As anyone who has been to Felipe's will tell you, it doesn't get any busier than around 2am on a Friday or Saturday.

A few of us decided to try and beat the Felipe's rush by leaving the bar at 1:30am. We were not successful.

There's been a lot of speculation that the Boston area burrito title is up for grabs. Given the bitter rivalries and remarkable similarities between Anna's, Boca, and Felipe's, it's no surprise that these are usually the three finalists. DJ Turbz (top) and Chris (left) give the vote to Felipe's.

I was a little mad at Felipe's 'cause they ran out of the chicken verde, which is my favorite. Instead I went with a steak burrito. I'm still leaning towards Anna's for the steak, but for the chicken verde there's no comparison. Literally.

The chicken verde is only available at Felipe's. Better get there before 1:30am if you expect there to be any left.

No Mas, No Mas!

Remember I mentioned that Felipe's runs out of food late at night? Evidence, my readers.

The big guy in the lower right is blockading the door as drunk students charge. Think European soccer match stampede, but for burritos.

Late Night Sour Cream

After a great night out in Cambridge with the kids from Overdrive, we went down Mass Ave to Harvard Square's Felipe's for a late night snack.

Felipe's has a habit of running out of food late at night. Fortunately they had just what I needed. The chicken verde cures all.

Kevin, pictured above enthusiastically points to some sour cream on his "Dammit how does a burrito place run out of beans?" burrito.

As usual, Sara didn't get anything.

Peppers: Red, Yellow, Green

The other day John, Sara, and I went to Felipe's for lunch. I got the a super chicken verde. John got the super chicken, and because the line was short, he asked them to throw in a few peppers. Sara, who does not like Mexican food (yet) got a turkey wrap from around the corner.

It had mayonnaise on it. Poor girl.

Felipe's Petition To Stay Open Later

I mentioned only the other day the ongoing improvements at Felipe's. This is the best yet.

According to Junior Burrito Analyst John Furnari, they are collecting signatures to petition the state for a later closing time. Currently, they close around 2:30 am or so on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The goal is 4:00 am.

Where do I sign?

Felipe's Abandons The Diced Jalapeños

This is truly great. They used to dice the jalapeños. It was one of my biggest complaints. Now, they slice them!

I don't know whose idea this was, but its discovery made my day. I love the constant improvement. It makes the burritos better for us all.

Bravo, Felipe's!

That's all I have to say about that.

Human Resources

John and I initiated our new intern today with a standard burrito ritual. John got a nice parking spot over in Harvard Square, and I got the chicken verde. Sara, our new intern, has a fondness for spreadsheets. We rule at HR.

Welcome to Felipe's Taqueria

This establishment is one of the best things to happen to Harvard Square (Map) since Newbury Comics first settled upstairs at the Garage many years back. Felipe's is a new entry into Boston's small world of burrito options and people are taking note.

People say change is always good, but in this case, change was a necessity. You see, Felipe's took over where Real Taco used to be, one of the worst places ever created. It was horrible, but that's all in the past.

Felipe's offers the standard menu items (Super Burrito, Burrito, Taco, Quesadilla, and Plate) plus a few extras like their Tostada and a condiment bar. The real differentiating factor is the hours. They close somewhere between 2 and 3 am Thursday through Saturday. Waking up with an undigested burrito and a puddle of liquor in your stomach isn't the best feeling, but an after bar snack always seems like the right thing to do at the time.
