Purple Cactus

Your Mission: Huevos Rancheros

Location: Boston area

Mission: Eat huevos rancheros

Time: Morning

Briefing: The quest for huevos rancheros in and around Boston is both challenging and rewarding. Spoils of victory cannot be compared. Tacos El Charro in JP has some excellent huevos rancheros, but they don't open until 11. Other local taquerias that offer plated meals usually do not open early enough, or do not stock huevos (see also: huevos blancos).

Mission Recap: I saw on the door that The Purple Cactus both has huevos ranchers, and opens at 9 am. All seemed too easy. Upon exploration, only the doors and smoothie machine open at 9. The kitchen opens at 10. And huevos rancheros is available only on the weekend. And it's in a tortilla, not on a plate. And there are no refried beans.

Mission Status: Failure.

Burrito Blog Sells Out

Since we've been gaining in notoriety over the past year, Burrito Blog has decided to up the ante. All photos from now on will feature models posing with burritos.

This is a joke.

The S Train Stops At The Purple Cactus

It's the S Train, folks! Boston socialite Sheb Shumar has been walking a fine line. For many years, despite his constant presence and good name on the streets of Boston, he remained unknown on the information superhighway.

Burrito Blog brings an end to his Internet anonymity.

Sheb enjoys a super chicken burrito with just the basics: chicken, rice, and a touch of sour cream.

I Like Your Mango Mamma

While the shrimp burrito didn't quite cut it, the Mango Mamma smoothie from the Purple Cactus is seriously great.

Most burrito places I frequent don't offer smoothies. Some offer frozen drinks, but only if they contain tequila - not to be confused with hot sauces that contain tequila.

Next time it's 100 degrees out, like today, stop in and try one of these, even if you're not in the mood for a burrito. Don't lie to yourself. You're always in the mood for a burrito.

Shrimp Burrito Falls Short

Last weekend a few of us hit the Purple Cactus in JP for dinner. I was in a wacky mood, so I got the wackiest thing on the menu.

I ordered the shrimp burrito with a spinach tortilla (an option I did not expect) and waited patiently.

It was so close to being excellent, but a few details blew it. So, if anyone who reads this frequents the Purple Cactus, please give the chef my recommendations:

1. Heat the shrimp. They're waiting on ice. Cold shrimp + hot beans = bad burrito.

2. Change up the cheese. They use this super fine shredded cheese that just didn't sit well with me.

If they take care of that, this burrito would be killer. Let's see how much recipe influence I have...

Welcome To The Purple Cactus

The Purple Cactus is a modern burrito joint in Boston's Jamaica Plain - right on Centre Street (Map).

They serve burritos, wraps, and smoothies.

The first time I went to this place was with Rich and Tim, who is now in Iraq. I remember Tim got two burritos, and then the three of us got drunk.
