The Best Looking Sauce

We were waiting to try this bottle of Eve Krakatoa for a while. After experimenting with some other sauces, we saved this bottle for last. Pictured in the background is the standard hot sauce test subject, a Mexican Plate from Anna's.

Although I personally prefer the green sauces to the red, cayenne based sauces, all in the office agreed unanimously: Eve is better than Tabasco.

Burrito Blog Moves To New York

It's true.

Please tell all your friends that I'll be writing about the local tortilla selection in this town, and to start embracing my adventures in NYC.

Also, if anyone has strong felings for Manhattan's burritos, please be sure to let me know and email me.

Goodbye Boston!

Finally, The Chilaquiles Hangover Cure

I first mentioned this a long time ago, and I'm sorry for the lapse in blogging and for keeping you all waiting.

It seems appropriate to finally share this incredible meal with you after a weekend of craving chilaquiles.

It's fried corn tortillas with eggs, salsa, and chipotle sauce served with a side of rice and low viscosity refried beans. It was amazing. Ethan and I both ditched our burritos and went after the chilaquiles. We were merciless in our pursuit of total consumption.

Was it the ultimate hangover cure? Angela's Burrito Style does not lie.

Would You Like Fries With That?

Reported by Phil from Miami

The choices at Jalapeno Jax weren't too tricky. For burritos, they had steak, chicken, carnitas, veggie, fish, and a "fajita burrito."

True to form I went with steak.

It was loaded with all the usual suspects; refried beans, rice, steak, lettuce, tomato, cheese, sour cream, and my choice of salsa: pico de gallo and some spicy green one. They brought the salsa in small dishes on the side of the salsa.

I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do with that.

I tried to spoon it onto the burrito with each bite. It was a little frustrating. What was more frustrating was that the burrito sort of tasted like a Big Mac. There was no special sauce; I didn't really understand how it happened.

Either way, it wasn't what I wanted out of a $10 burrito.

Welcome To Jalapeno Jax

From Miami's own Junior Analyst, Phil:

So I was sporting my "I Love Burritos" shirt in the mall recently when a kid came up to me to ask where I got it. We immediately began talking burritos. He told me I had to check out this place on 73rd and Biscayne (Map). This was not the first time I'd heard of this place that no one seemed to remember the name of.

No matter.

I headed off to 73rd and Biscayne to do some exploring. What I found there was place called Jalapeno Jax. It wasn’t a "burrito joint" per se; more of a regular sit-down Mexican restaurant.

I was optimistic until I saw a sign on the table that said "It's not the size of the burrito that matters…It's how good it tastes."

Everybody knows size matters.

Hands At 10 And 2

I used to be unreal at eating while driving. And by unreal I mean I wouldn't spill a single grain of rice from my super burrito. Of course, you should always concentrate while behind the wheel - I encourage safe driving.

In this particular photo, the '93 Subaru Legacy is parked. It may also be the last time I eat a burrito while driving, for reasons I will soon reveal...

Kid's Tabe Reunion

The Kid's table consists of the non-partners from my old job. The cast of characters includes John, Nikhiel, Greg, Zach, Sara, Me, and Kevin, pictured at right.

The reunion will take place in New York, and will likely include many cervezas and tequila.

Happy Birthday Al Pastor

Nikhiel, who is the man, is celebrating his birthday today.

Following John's and my evacuation from our employment in Brighton, Nikhiel is the latest captain of the ship. He enjoys the Al Pastor, exclusively.

This picture was taken probably six weeks ago, which should give you an idea of how far behind I am on my posts.

Happy Birthday!

Burrito Blog & Nielsen Ratings

Clearly, the last appearance of Burrito Blog on television garnered record breaking ratings for the station. As a result, the Mexican episode of the Phantom Gourmet will be rebroadcast to Massachusetts based viewers on Sunday at 11:00 AM, kicked off by yours truly.

If your tv set is in better shape than mine, check it out.

I Like Your Mango Mamma

While the shrimp burrito didn't quite cut it, the Mango Mamma smoothie from the Purple Cactus is seriously great.

Most burrito places I frequent don't offer smoothies. Some offer frozen drinks, but only if they contain tequila - not to be confused with hot sauces that contain tequila.

Next time it's 100 degrees out, like today, stop in and try one of these, even if you're not in the mood for a burrito. Don't lie to yourself. You're always in the mood for a burrito.

The Ultimate Hangover Cure

Setting: Chicago. Sunday Morning. Here's a hint about how the last night went - Ethan was chatting up a cab driver last night about Ghanaian politics.

We were hurting the next morning, so when the menu at Angela's described one item as, "The Ultimate Hangover Cure" we had to try it. Review to follow.

Welcome To Angela's Burrito Style

The Mexican food highlight of my Chicago vacation, Ethan took me to Angela's one Sunday morning after a long night of drinking.

It's located on North Clark Street, (Map) which is to say I had no idea where it was.

While this wasn't his favorite spot, the other was too far away. Yeah, Chicago is huge.

Click on the menu for a readable size.

Down The Shore: Belmar

From Junior Burrito Analyst Big Mike:

Belmar (Map) has to be the laziest man's town in Jersey.

Cheesesteaks, subs and 30 packs of beer aren't the only thing that can be ordered for delivery. 10th Ave Burrito will deliver burritos anywhere in Belmar almost any time of day or night.

That includes the beach.

The chicken burrito with hot sauce is the spiciest burrito I've ever eaten. Burritos and the shore on a hot day don't really mix but it’s something I had to try.

Brandwashed, Wholefoods, Microwave

Although I have earlier pointed out the perils of combining tortillas and radiation based heating devices (which are safe but taste bad), some burritos are designed with digital timers in mind.

Greg, how was it? From what I remember, he said it wasn't bad. I'll get the details soon.

Oh, and his super cool shirt is available from Brandwashed.

Welcome To Whole Foods

This spot doesn't just sell tortilla related foods, but they do offer a couple burrito options.

While some talk poorly about the corporate burritos and smile at establishments like whole foods, please remember that it is possible to serve both the customer and the shareholder (see chart).

Wholefoods serves only natural and organic foods from their 169 locations, but do they serve good burritos?

We will find out.

La Cascada

Have you ever been chewing some bubble gum and then get sprayed in the mouth with seltzer water? That's what this stuff tastes like. Greg, John and I all tasted it, and we all hated it.

Don't be brave. I take that back. Be brave and get any kind of solid food at Taco Loco. Don't be stupid. Don't get the La Cascada.

Caution: The Moving Walkway Is Ending

This really looks better than it tasted. It was the chicken fajita meal from Lalo's at the airport in Chicago.

Do yourself a favor and eat before you pass through security. That way you can skip the food and just get the beer at Lalo's. As it comes in a bottle sealed in a factory, I expect it is of higher quality than the food.

Even though this is the first post from my epic trip to Chicago, this was the last Mexican I ate. The good stuff is yet to come.

Welcome To Lalo's

Pardon these entries from my trip to Chicago. They're totally out of order. Lalo's is located in Midway (Map) - the airport.

Usually airports are not known for their culinary experience. Midway is true to form.
