Phil Versus The Burrito

Title fight re-cap from Junior Burrito Analyst Phil in Miami:

In one corner, measuring in at 16 inches, filled with steak, lettuce, tomato, and cheese, the Taco Rico "Ultimate Big Burrito" first mentioned here.

In the other corner, the bottomless pit, the burrito graveyard, Phil Jonas' stomach.

Yes, the burrito was big (it barely fit on the elongated oval plate). Yes, my girlfriend and I had seen one man try to conquer it and fail (like Jonah and the Baja). But Phil's stomach is more than a man. Well, I guess it's technically less than a man, but you understand what I mean. I'm not sure why, but for some time I had been intimidated by the "Ultimate Big Burrito," having only seen it once, and left only half eaten by a man of lesser burrito-devouring prowess.

My intimidation proved unjust.

I ate the burrito with ease, though I had to cut it in half, because you can't stand up a 16 inch burrito. My girlfriend watched with disgust as I also ate the chips and salsa. Then, we immediately went out and played tennis for 2 hours, which proved slightly uncomfortable.

I should know better than to doubt my abilities, which have been tested time and again, both with burritos, and the great Pizza Mart wager of 2003.

Winner by way of knockout, Phil's stomach.

Some Like It Wet

I went to Taco Rico to explore their burritos. They’ve got two kinds of burritos, Big Burritos and California Burritos. There are some differences in the filling, but also difference in the size.

Stay with me here.

They offer either burrito in regular or ultra size. The smallest is the regular California. A regular Big Burrito is the same size as an ultra California burrito. Then there’s the ultra Big Burrito, which I saw some guy order. I only caught a quick look but it looked to be about the size of my leg. The guy didn’t come close to finishing it. I’ll be back for that.

This time I went with the ultra size California burrito with steak. From there I had to decide if I wanted it "wet." Wet means they cover the burrito in enchilada sauce and melted cheese for $1.70. I went for it. The burrito ended up costing $8.40, but it was big and they give you free chips & salsa with every meal. Getting it "wet" was a good call too. It was pretty good and it filled me up.

Welcome To Taco Rico

The first stop on my journey was Taco Rico. Fortunately, my girlfriend is a Mexican food fiend and turned me onto this charming and reasonably priced joint not far from her apartment in Coral Gables (Map). I have stopped in a few times before for some of their absurdly large combination platters. It’s time to turn my attention to the burrito.
